I'm definitley picking up what your putting down haha.I guess theres no wrong or right necessarly, its a matter of balance, we need a solid balance of borrow/steal/produce, and it seems righ tnow we just borrow and steal ha. Combine that with a little more humble expectations of quality of life and reduce the deficit and we can be sustainable I would think. Thanks for the input Dave, I wasnt sure anyone was paying attention.

LOL yeah I have a bit of Econ background but I am not an economist by trade, either. In a nutshell I don't disagree with you :)

"With a consumer population..." That is a big part of the issue. Everything is consumer-centric - but here's the rub: there are only three ways you can acquire consumption goods:

* Borrow
* Steal
* Produce

As you note, we're really lacking in that last department: Production. As long as you're a nation of productive people/companies, you can use those products to trade/purchase whatever you want to consume.

I might give this some more thought!

well, I'm not an economist, but I would think the sovereign debt is in many ways a symptom of the export/import problem. With a consumer population and higher unemployment we need to borrow money to bolster social programs, defense, etc. If we put more emphasis on trades, manufacturing, and basic employment rather than going to college, working in an office, and purchasing finished goods on amazon all day, we may not need to borrow money to sustain our quality of life. ( I dont mean everyone, but it does seem in this country we have put a conotation on trades and non-degree-requiring work like machinists that we would need more of in this country if we made more stuff here). I could be way off, like I said I'm not an economist, its just what I can gather from my own experiences.

the debt to CN is mostly sovereign debt - although it does contribute to the problems (i.e., you mention sustainability) it isn't really related to exports/imports. I would say that quality is no longer an issue, but labor conditions probably still are (would you rather work in a factory in Detroit or Shanghai?)

Biggest issue by far is whether it is sustainable. I don't think it is.
